Small businesses need advertising to get off the ground, but it can be overwhelming trying to work out where to invest a the bulk of the advertising budget which is usually not a lot! It all depends on the sort of business you have and it is not always clear what the best way forward is. A good reputation and word of mouth are your best assets but getting to that point is still sometimes challenging.

Although costs of printing and producing quality optimized websites may take up the bulk of your advertising budget, there are several things you can do that cost hardly anything at all, that may prove effective at getting your message out there. There are several websites that allow you to post your business details on them, so have a look and see how many places you can virtually advertise for free.

Find internet forums relating to the sort of business you do and register and take part, and simply include the link to your business in your profile information and while you are talking about it. You can also include a link to your business in email signatures.

However if you enjoy being out and about, and have plenty of flyers and business cards, depending on your target market, it may be a good thing to stick flyers on windscreens or on community message boards or even stick business cards in library books!

If you do a fair amount of posting, you can hire or buy a franking machine that will greatly reduce your postage costs, as well as allow you to print a slogan on every envelope you send, getting your message out that way to anyone who comes in contact with your letters.
