When it comes to changing the way that businesses operate their telephone systems, one of the biggest introductions and changes that we have seen over the last few years has been the rise of VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol. The VoIP system generally involves running a telephone system over the internet rather than through traditional telephone lines.

In general it is a cheap alternative to many businesses and although there are many advantages and disadvantages of this style of telephone network, it can really help to drive business costs down, especially when it comes to making frequent overseas calls.

It's not just a business environment which has taken on board this technology, VoIP has been a popular choice in the home environment and applications such as Skype have brought this type of technology to the forefront. Wherever you are in the world, Skype uses VoIP software to allow you to make calls to loved ones, for free. You can also transfer files, pictures and other documents as you would in an email. Making it far easier to stay in contact with friends or family, this type of technology has dramatically decreased the cost of making overseas telephone calls.

Although VoIP is a great innovation in technology there are many problems associated with the technology which are still being ironed out. The reliability and consistency of the line can be one main problem that is seen, as the telephone quality is entirely dependent on the internet connection. If your internet connection is continually dropping in and out then it can be frustrating to have to continually reconnect your telephone call.

To keep your telephone calls secure it's also important to encrypt your internet connection and although at home you may not need to worry about this, when it comes to using VoIP in a commercial environment it's important to take the safety and reliability of your network seriously.
